The national flower of Ukraine, sunflowers (sunyashniki) have long been loved by Ukrainians, where golden fields of them face the warmth and power of the sun. At the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Ukraine is also one of the largest producers and exporters of sunflower seeds and oil. Sunflowers first made their way to Ukraine via North America, where they were a native food crop. Seeds were brought back to the old world and grew well in the rich soil of the “Black Earth” regions of Ukraine. This versatile food crop brings joy and beauty to the people of Ukraine, but since the Russian invasion, the sunflower has become a global symbol of resistance, unity and hope.
